The ceremonial groundbreaking for the new San Pedro
Fire Station was officially held last Thursday. Present for the ceremony were
Belize National Fire Service Chief Mr. Henry Baizer; his worship Alberto Nuñez,
Mayor of San Pedro Town; Area Representative Patty Arceo; Assistant
Superintendent of Police, Michael Gutierrez; Mr. Ramon Nuñez Sr. and many other
invited guests. The construction of the new fire station,
already in progress, is being funded by the Government of Belize. The new
facility is estimated to be completed in a four-month period and upon its completion will house an
office, sleeping quarters, station and parking area, storeroom and recreational
facilities. The ceremony served a dual purpose as a
second fire truck arrived in San Pedro and was officially presented to the
Belize National Fire Chief. The truck which was recently given to San Pedro is a
donation from the Mayor of Cherryville, North Carolina. Mr. Robby Robson, a
friend and visitor to our town and Mr. Ramon Nuñez of San Pedro Town joined
forces in acquiring the much needed fire truck. During the ceremony Mr. Ramon
Nuñez officially handed over the keys of the truck to Mr. Henry Baizer of the
Belize National Fire Service. San Pedro is now the proud owner of two fire
trucks; the second one being a brand new one donated by the Government of
Belize, which arrived in San Pedro the end of July. The old fire truck has been
sent back to Belize City where it will be used as a parts supplement
vehicle. San Pedro Fire Chief Mr. Denice Plummer
commented, "Now that we have the necessary equipment, we need volunteers. I
encourage people to join us in our volunteer program." Anyone interested in
volunteering their time to the fire department can join the volunteer program
held at the headquarters every Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. and Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
for one-hour of basic fire drill training. The only traits needed are the energy
and enthusiasm to help, but volunteers are required to be sixteen years or
older. Anyone interested may call the fire chief at 026-2372.
