Local organizations receive donations from Elaine
and Joe Polak
|
The San
Pedro Lions Inter-Community Hospital, San Pedro Library and SAGA Society
recently received generous donations from frequent visitors to "La Isla Bonita."
Elaine and Joe Polak, founders of the Aimee Eve Polak Memorial Scholarship Fund
arrived on the island last weekend and presented the checks to representatives
of these organizations at the Lions Den. The Aimee Eve
Polak Memorial Scholarship Fund is in memory of Aimee, the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Polak of Skillman, New Jersey, who was tragically killed in a car accident
on April 8th, 1996. The funds
for this scholarship are made possible through donations from local
corporations, small businesses, friends and participants of the annual "Run With
Aimee" 5K Race and One Mile Ramble. Proceeds from this race enable the Polaks to
make donations of this kind to numerous organizations in the United States and
for the second time to San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. Last year they presented
donations to the Lions Inter-Community Hospital and the San Pedro Library. After
learning about SAGA Society, the non-profit "humane society" that addresses the
stray cat and dog population in San Pedro, the Polaks decided to donate to this
worthy cause as well. The San Pedro Lions
Inter-Community Hospital received US$3,000. The San Pedro Library and SAGA
Society US$1,000 each. Accepting on behalf of the San Pedro Lions
Inter-Community Hospital was President Alex Eiley who thanked the Polaks for
their great hearts and assured them that the contribution will be put to good
use. He commented that although the construction of the hospital is presently
stagnant, donations should be forthcoming and construction will soon resume.
Mrs. Mary Beissner of the San Pedro Library told the San Pedro
Sun that the donations will come in very handy as the library
is in the process of purchasing a glass door and an air-conditioning unit to
provide more comfort for the students and visitors to the library. SAGA
Society's donation automatically makes the Aimee Eve Polak Memorial Fund a
"Founder" sponsor. According to SAGA Director, Dr. Bronwen Eastwood the money
will aid in the construction of an animal/educational center on the island.
On behalf of the three organizations who
received donations, the San Pedro Sun joins the
rest of the community in thanking Mr. and Mrs. Polak and all the participants of
the Aimee Eve Polak Memorial Scholarship Fund for their kind donations. Through
this significant gesture Aimee will forever have a place in the hearts of the
residents of San Pedro.
