Glamour
and beauty were the order of the day and they took center stage during "Noche
Sanpedrana" last Friday. Held in Rico's Restaurant at the Villas at Banyan Bay,
hundreds of residents of San Pedro had the opportunity to meet the contestants
for the Reina de la Costa Maya Pageant. Considered by many as the social event
of the year, this specific evening was designed to give sponsors, businesspeople
and the entire community the opportunity to mingle with these beauties before
pageant night.

The true Central American
charm and charisma was obvious in the four contestants and the reigning Miss
Costa Maya, Sandra Glower Silis of El Salvador. Unfortunately, the fifth
contestant representing Mexico, Evelyn López Pacheco, was unable to attend as
she fell ill. Miss López Pacheco is being substituted by Xenia Cervera Santoya.
This seventeen year-old beauty hails from the state of Quintana Roo where she
holds the title of Miss Bachilleres 2001. At a
brief ceremony, Mayor Alberto Nuñez took personal pleasure in welcoming the
contestants to "La Isla Bonita" and wished them a most enjoyable stay in San
Pedro. The participants then eloquently introduced themselves before receiving
their official sash from Miss San Pedro 2000-2001 Adaly Guerrero, assisted by
the reigning Miss Costa Maya. The Director of the festival, Melanie Paz, then
gave the vote of thanks. Adding a touch of local flare to
the evening were dance presentations by the San Pedro Dance Company and
Barbara's Dance Group. San Pedro's own "numero uno" musical entertainers Wil
Nuñez and Dale Wallace serenaded the contestants and entertained the crowd with
their melodious music. Those attending then took the opportunity to steal a kiss
or engage in a quick chat with the contestants, in an attempt to make their own
judgment on who the new Costa Maya Queen would be.

Since
their arrival to Belize, the contestants have engaged in a variety of activities
including a visit to Altun Ha Maya ruin, Maruba Jungle Spa and Resort, a tour of
San Pedro Town, a picnic at Basil Jones, a visit to "Temptation Island," special
appearances at local nightclubs, parasailing and a snorkeling trip to Hol Chan
and Shark Ray Alley. Doing an excellent job as chaperons for the contestants are
Charlotte Romero, Maribel Gomez, Marisa Salazar, Ian Noble and Santiago
Vasquez. Tonight these beauties will
each represent their individual country with much pride. If you have
reserved your ticket, see for yourself. If not, better get there early and
remember the pageant begins at 7:30 p.m. The Reina de la Costa Maya Pageant will
be conducted by soap opera star Valentino Lanùs. Who will the winner be? Whoever
it may be, each is worthy of the title. Good Luck Ladies!
