. Cancelled last year due to Hurricane
Keith, the island's humane society is back on track and ready to earn some
well-deserved funding for its animal shelter/education center. Nearly a dozen
SAGA members and friends were present at the meeting and volunteered their time
for the upcoming affair. This year's fundraiser will
coincide with a two-day barbecue, complete with a live band, being held at
Toucan's Restaurant located at Royal Palm Villas, beginning at 1:00 p.m. and
lasting until 6:00 each evening. Scheduled events are kayak races, a bake sale,
chair massages, and a "silent" auction full of marvelous items "ripe for the
bidding." Wonderful prizes will also be given away for those participating in
the SAGA Society dog show and the children's art contest. Additional fundraising
activities will feature the sale of SAGA T-shirts and tank tops, along with
items created by local students at a children's craft sale spearheaded by Morgan
Pickard. A "Golf Cart Wash" will also be held on Saturday only.
Other business at the meeting included the donation of much needed surgical
supplies from "Florian" Cathar. This will aid in defraying the costs of the many
spay and neuter services SAGA has performed on stray animals in recent months.
The director was happy to name a new Silver Sponsor, Betsy Thornton, who joined
the ranks last month by donating $500 to the society. Also announced was the
gift of two animal-catching devices, a "crush cage" and "lasso" provided by
Marie Carroll and Phil Rigby with help from Martine Swint. Director Eastwood
informed those attending of the large amount of T-shirt sales that have taken
place by way of the SAGA website. She stated that more than
$700BZ has been raised thus far thanks to this quite profitable
idea, spawned by ambergriscaye.com webmaster Marty Casado who also created and
supports the society's website. Dr. Eastwood also informed that another task
completed was the mounting of the framed SAGA poster and donation box on the
wall in the Tropic Air departure lounge. The Society takes this opportunity to
extend their heartfelt appreciation to all who have given financially or of
themselves to promote this worthy cause. Several members
and friends of SAGA will be soliciting local businesses for prizes and auction
items in the next few weeks. A follow-up meeting for the fundraiser will be held
this Thursday, September 13
th
at 6:00 p.m. Anyone interested in being involved in the fundraiser or wishing to
donate prizes and items for the auction may call 3266 for more information.
Additional details regarding the fundraiser will be included in next week's
edition of the San Pedro Sun.
