On Friday, May
31st, San Pedro School
students congregated at the Lions Den to cheer for their favorite contestant of
the Annual Drug Education Quiz Contest. The event was held as part of Drug
Awareness Week sponsored by the National Drug Abuse Control Council (NDACC).
Under the theme "Belizeans - Unite for a Drug Free Belize" fun and educational
activities were scheduled from June 2nd - 7th in order to highlight the challenge
being faced by Belizean society as they grapple with the reality of drug use and
abuse. One way of emphasizing the message was through the drug education quiz
contest which gives Belizean students an opportunity to answer questions
regarding drug awareness. Students from Maestro Reyes
School of Knowledge, San Pedro Roman Catholic School, Isla Bonita Elementary and
St. Peter's Elementary took part in the zone eliminations. All students
responded with great enthusiasm to the questions and real-life scenarios but at
the end it was Daisy Bobadillo of San Pedro Roman Catholic School who took first
place. Second place went to Stephanie Beltran of St. Peter's Elementary. The two
students traveled to Belize City on Tuesday, June 4 th where they competed against sixteen
students during the district competition. After a tie-breaking round it was
Tyrell Young of Pancotta Primary School in Sand Hill who was awarded first place
and Nicole Hamilton of St. Ignatius School in Belize City took second place.
These two students now prepare for the national competition to be held this
Friday, June 7th at the
Belize City Center at 9:00 a.m. Present for the zone
eliminations in San Pedro was Karen Bodden of the NDACC; Rosario Guerrero of San
Pedro Roman Catholic School and Antonio Sansorez of St. Peter's Elementary
served as scorekeepers; Silvia Cucul of Isla Bonita Elementary as timekeeper and
Karen Castillo of the NDACC office as the caller. Congratulations to all the
participants of the 7th
Annual Drug Education Quiz Contest.
