A public meeting was held last Wednesday regarding the current
status of the new San Pedro Municipal Pier and when local barge
operators would be relocating to this area. Attending the meeting were
Area Representative Manuel Heredia Jr., Deputy Mayor Severo Guerrero
Sr., Belize Ports Authority representatives Commissioner Major Lloyd
Jones and Chairman Fred Hunter Sr., representatives of the Ambergris
Caye business community, San Pedro barge owners and hoteliers.
This meeting basically served as a means for barge owners to voice
their opinions and queries in regards to the pier. The major concerns
they revealed were: (1) The channel entering the marina is too narrow.
Barge owners believe that in order for barges to pass in and out of the
marina properly, the channel must be widened by at least 200 more feet.
(2) The channel is not deep enough. According to Area Representative
Manuel Heredia Jr. the marina was "sounded" and proved to be seven feet
deep. This, according to barge owners, is still not deep enough for
most barges to enter the channel, and it will need to be at least ten
feet deep. (3) Only two to three barges can dock at the pier without
blocking the exit. Barge owners explained that the island "houses" up
to 12 barges and that at any given time up to seven barges will need to
dock at the pier. (4) All of the island barges should be required to
move. The barge owners questioned whether the Bowen and Bowen, butane
and fuel barges would also be required to move.
In an interview with The San Pedro Sun, Belize Ports Authority
Commissioner Jones stated that Chairman Fred Hunter Sr. would be
checking into all of these concerns. At this point in time, San Pedro
barge owners have expressed no desire to move to the new municipal pier
until the above-mentioned concerns are addressed to their satisfaction.
