Zenie Varela - Mother of the Year 2004

To honor all local mothers, the San Pedro Town Council held their annual Mother's Day celebration last Saturday evening. Central Park was filled to capacity with over six hundred mothers in attendance enjoying this special day.

Upon entering the gate, mothers received a beautiful rose pin and a raffle ticket to win one of over thirty prizes. Masters of Ceremonies for this festive gala were Reef Radio's own DJs Medardo Rodriguez Murillo and Luis Romero. After a brief welcome by Mayor Elsa Paz, Mrs. Martha Guerrero offered a wonderful prayer for all mothers on the island.

Before, during, and after dinner, mothers were entertained by the talented dancers of the San Pedro Dance Company, who had moms tapping their feet along with the music. A touching poem written and recited by Councilor Merlene Spain delighted the audience. Skits and songs were performed by a variety of island school children; wishing everyone a joyful Mother's Day. Local singers Zahairie Chable and Karaoke Champion Mario Leal, serenaded mothers with sweet songs. The Mariachi "Los Hurracanes" from Mexico, were also on hand to entertain the women with their passionate music.

The announcement everybody was waiting for - Mother of the Year 2004 ñ was awarded to Mrs. Zenie Varela. A well respected, wonderful mother, Mrs. Varela received a number of prizes including $500 cash, a Mother of the Year plaque and a set of gold bracelets.

Beautifully wrapped gifts were handed out to the moms in attendance over the course of the evening. Mothers of twins, the mother with the whitest hair and the mother with the most children (an amazing 23 kids!), as well as other category winners excitedly accepted prizes which included a microwave, a gold pendant, lamps, frames, and other presents which were raffled throughout the evening.

Laughter echoed through the park as both Masters of Ceremonies kept "mommies" amused through the entire fun-filled night. The "Super Furia Band" from Orange Walk Town delighted those present with their lively music that raised everybody to their feet to dance.

The organizers of this special Mother's Day Celebration 2004 would like to thank all the sponsors, entertainers and volunteers who made this year's spectacular event an unforgettable one!
