For the first time in the history of the Reina de la Costa Maya, a
non-Mundo Maya country will be represented at this prestigious pageant.
The International Costa Maya Festival Committee has confirmed that
Costa Rica will be present at this gala event through the participation
of Miss Costa Rica World 2004 Shirley Calvo.
This 22-year-old Costa Rican beauty, is five-feet, nine-inches
tall, and is currently studying Business Administration/International
Relations.
According to a Costa Maya representative, the Costa Rican
Ambassador to Belize, having learned about the cultural and musical
diversity of this festival, was very much interested in having a Costa
Rican contestant represent their country. The Committee embraced this
idea, welcoming the participation of Costa Rica.
The beauty ambassadors are scheduled to arrive in Belize on July
29th to commence preparation for the pageant scheduled for Thursday,
August 5th. On this night, Farah Evans (Belize), Marva Weatherborn
(Guatemala), Marisol Avila (Mexico), Karla Mendoza (Honduras), Rocio
Caceres (El Salvador) and Shirley Calvo (Costa Rica) will illuminate
the stage as they compete for the 2004 Reina de la Costa Maya crown.
Also making a special appearance that night will be the reigning queen,
Belize's own Leilah Pandy.
Anyone needing more information on the festival or wanting to be a
sponsor may contact Mr. Wil Alamilla at 226-4163.
