Whilst the school boasts a computer lab, school children also are looking forward to the library that is currently being built.

It started as a dream – to become the first primary school in Ambergris Caye to host a fully operational computer lab – on Friday, September 12th, friends, and faculty gathered at the Holy Cross school for the official inauguration of the dream that came to fruition.
Hundreds of attendees gathered for the blessing at the school campus as Father Bishop Wright led in prayer. According to Principal of the school Francis Wilson, “This new lab will enable our teachers to be more efficient in the classroom and help our students to learn more about themselves, their surroundings and the outside world.”
Construction of the lab started back in January of this year and with the unfailing support of over 25 mission church teams and, hundreds of dedicated hours from staff and volunteers from around the world, the school now boasts a one of a kind education center which became fully operational for this school year. The lab houses 40 new DELL Computers, a projector screen and projector all housed in air conditioned comfort. According to Wilson, “We [Holy Cross] are ready to launch into the education of the 20th Century,” she exclaimed.
Grown through leaps and bounds, Holy Cross currently hosts five hundred and thirteen students (513) and a staff of seventeen (17) teachers along with two security guards that live on the premises. Since the school has been a target from thieves and after being broken into last year, security was “beefed up” for the lab and precautions have been made, according to Wilson, to modify it to a standard that proves to be no easy entry. “We have designed the building to have a standard security system by incorporating re-bars which are long strips of steels that were welded together on all doors, the ceiling and floors. Although it is not full proof, we also have two on site security guards that look after the school.”
When asked about how much was invested into building the lab, Wilson commented that with the unfailing support from its church partners and business affiliates, the price tag to bring up the building was $150,000Bze whilst the computers and equipment rung up to a total of $60,000US which was mostly donated by several generous individuals. Wilson is grateful to all who were involved as the groups all contributed financially toward the cost of construction materials and provided much needed labor and expertise. And, although there is the need for a computer instructor or someone to oversee the lab, Wilson stated that they are trying to get approval from the Ministry of Education to hire a designated computer teacher. Currently, the teachers have been receiving training and given some computer knowledge on how to go about foreseeing the lab.
As far as computer classes go, Wilson explained that computer lessons have been included in this year’s curriculum and that students from both Standard Four classes, the Standard Five class and the Standard Six class, spend one hour weekly learning on the computer. On Tuesday, the school started incorporating computer classes for all the other classes in their learning exercises. Computer classes have also been extended to the recent graduates of the school in an effort to further prepare them for high school. As an added tool, the school is offering computer class to the community in all areas including English as a second language, Accounting and literacy programs.
Whilst the school boasts a computer lab, school children also are looking forward to the library that is currently being built. According to Wilson, “We are very excited with the development and achievements that the school has gained. We are working on finishing our library and have received tremendous donations of books from generous individuals. We are also installing a counseling office and will have a designated counselor from the University of Mississippi who will be offering her expertise to the school and students.” Other plans for the school include more classrooms and installing a playground but with every development comes the need for more financial assistance. It is the hope of the school and faculty to provide the best quality education a child can get and little by little with the collaborative efforts of everyone the dreams starts becoming a reality, slowly but surely.
